Guy Nelson Steele, 89, life-long resident of Doniphan, Missouri, departed this life Friday, September 11, 2015, at the Poplar Bluff Regional Medical Center in Poplar Bluff, Missouri. Mr. Steele, son of Elmer and Laura (Brooks) Steele, was born October 26, 1925, in Doniphan. He had been self-employed in the sawmill industry and was also a life-long farmer. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and woodcraftsman specializing in making rocking chairs and rebuilding wagons. Mr. Steele was a veteran of the U. S. Army, having served in the 69th infantry division in Germany during World War II. He was especially proud of his wartime service and recalled his experiences of marching all across Europe and eventually meeting Russia at the Elbe River near the conclusion of the war. On September 15, 1944, he was married to Juanita Pauline Skaggs in Corning, Arkansas, and she survives. Also surviving are six sons; George (Mary) Steele of Fredricktown, Missouri, Ray (Janis) Steele of Scottsville, Kentucky, Gene (Sonya) Steele and Wayne (Linda) Steele, both of Doniphan, Glenn (Meshelle) Steele of Sante Fe, Tennessee, and Brian (Michelle) Steele of Sturgis, Kentucky; 21 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 sister, Genevieve Mille, and 2 brothers, Raymond Steele and William “Jack” Steele. Visitation will be Saturday evening, September 12, 2015, from 5 – 8 p.m. in the Edwards Funeral Home in Doniphan. The funeral service will take place Sunday afternoon, September 13, 2015, at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home chapel with Brother Hubert Payne officiating. Burial will be in the Brooks Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Diabetes Association.
