Mrs. Young was born March 6, 1920, in Mobeetie, Texas, to Joe and Margaret (Reynolds) West. They later moved to Wellington, Texas, where she lived until she graduated from high school. After graduation, she earned her beautician’s license in Wichita, Kansas. She later moved to San Diego, California, where she worked in a defense plant as an authentic “Rosie the Riveter” during World War II. After the war, she returned to her hometown of Wellington. On August 18, 1946, she married John Thomas “J.T.” Young, her loving husband of fifty-six years. He preceded her in death on November 15, 2002. She was a member of First Christian Church, a member and past president of the Republican Women of Ripley County, and enjoyed being a member of Current River Country Club; she never really mastered the game of golf, but she thoroughly enjoyed the socializing. Maggie was a devoted wife and mother, and loved cooking and caring for her family. She loved to laugh and was blessed with a wonderful sense of humor. She was an accomplished seamstress and delighted in sewing for her granddaughters. She cherished each and every moment spent with her family, and the many special memories of their beloved MaMaw will live on forever in the hearts of her grandchildren. Surviving are one son, Ramie (Penny) Hopwood of Doniphan; three daughters, Brenda Colbert of Sherwood AR, Tommye (Johnny) Garrett of Doniphan, and Sedonia (Ron) Young of Cloverdale, CA; ten grandchildren, Jon Colbert, Yvonne Badley, Angelia Hopwood-Lewis, Kristi Speck, Donna Shaw, Dawn Strong, Brandon Garrett, Shannon Steele, Neil Hopwood, and Wade Maples; twenty-one great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren.
